20 Things You Didn’t Know About Dr. Seuss

You’ve probably been pronouncing “Seuss” wrong.

Sorry, but Seuss is not pronounced “Soose.” Instead, Dr. Seuss and his family, who emigrated to the US from Bavaria, pronounce the name “Zoice.”

Seuss collected hats, won a Pulitzer Prize, coined the word ‘nerd’, and more.

Marilyn La Jeunesse and Insider present the above and 19 other
“surprising things you didn’t know about Dr. Seuss.”

Bonus surprise thing:

“Hejji” by Dr. Seuss was a Sunday strip that ran for three months in 1935 (April 7 – July 7).

Craig Yoe presents most of them here, and all of them in his Kids Komics book.

  1. Geisel adopted the “sooce” pronunciation himself, bowing to pressure. You’re certainly right that it -should- be “zoice,” but I had to give up when I found that out.

There’s another Hejji where he sees two guys with one beard, a trope he also used in his wartime PM cartoons and THE 5,000 FINGERS OF DR T. I keep thinking it should be in a SNAFU cartoon too, but don’t even have a candidate for it. Operative word: should.
