The Village Voice is Silenced

After shutting down the print edition September 2017, now the online Village Voice is shuttered.

Three years after buying The Village Voice, and a year after the paper shut down its print edition, owner Peter Barbey told the remaining staff today that the publication will no longer be posting any new stories.

Barbey said that half of the staff, which is around 15 to 20 people, will remain on to “wind things down,” and work on a project to archive the Voice’s material online.

The story as carried by The Gothamist with Barbey’s full statement.

The Village Voice for it first 50 years was a good place for cartoonists.

Wikipedia lists some of The Voice’s past contributing cartoonists:

The newspaper has also been a host to underground cartoonists. In addition to mainstay Jules Feiffer, whose cartoon ran for decades in the paper until its cancellation in 1996, well-known cartoonists featured in the paper have included R. Crumb, Matt Groening, Lynda Barry, Stan Mack, Mark Alan Stamaty, Ted Rall, Tom Tomorrow, Ward Sutton, Ruben Bolling and M. Wartella.

A bit over a dozen years ago new management was not friendly to cartoonists. Their Village Voice Media Group pf about 15 alternative weeklies stopped carrying comix, while The Voice itself cut back dramatically. Still, sad to see it gone.
