Drawing Caleeforneeya: Political Cartoons of Rex Babin, 1999 – 2012
The California Museum, in association with the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists, is presenting a retrospective exhibit honoring Sacramento Bee editorial cartoonist Rex Babin.
The exhibit, running August 14 – October 14, 2018, will coincide with the AAEC Convention in Sacramento, California the weekend of September 20 -23, 2018.
Connected to the exhibit and the convention is The Rex Babin Memorial Award for Excellence in Local Cartooning. The award focuses exclusively on state and local commentary, and the deadline for entries (August 17) is swiftly approaching.
In other award news: The Overseas Press Club of America. Among their annual presentations is the Thomas Nast Award, for the best cartoons on international affairs.
Change the name please! That’s what the Ancient Order of Hibernians is asking of the presenters of a prestigious award for political cartooning named after famed 19th century illustrator Thomas Nast.
In a letter to the Overseas Press Club’s, the Ancient Order of Hibernians said that it was requesting that the club rename its prestigious award for political cartooning prior to accepting nominations for 2019.
Currently the award is named for Thomas Nast, a 19th Century illustrator who habitually depicted Irish immigrant as violent ape-like creatures, said AOH National Anti-Defamation Chair, Neil Cosgrove, who penned the letter to the club.
