40 Years of Saad Cartoons

Dan Saad hasn’t been out of print since college.

When U.S. newspaper circulation peaked at more than 60 million in the 1980s, his editorial cartoons graced the pages of The News-Herald.

Three decades later, they still do.

Dan’s AAEC profile says he “worked as the editorial cartoonist at the student newspaper, The South End, from 1972-1977.” After college “Dan was the staff editorial cartoonist for The Daily Tribune, in Royal Oak, and his editorial cartoons have appeared regularly in The Macomb Daily, Suburban Sunday, The Advisor, The Grosse Pointe News and Heating, Cooling and Air Conditioning News.”

Currently Dan does regular cartooning for The (Southgate, Michigan) News-Herald (30 years) and Crain’s Detroit Business (24 years).

The News-Herald profiles Dan as he prepares a presentation (August 23) on cartoons and the creative process for VIP Camp Connect, a nonprofit organization that sponsors a Downriver day camp for individuals with special needs between the age of 8-26.

For comic strip fans Dan’s AAEC profile says

He has written and drawn four cartoon strips in his career – “Funniestuff” (1976-1981), Donald Sample (1986-1990), Jack Stropp on Sports (The Daily Tribune, 1987-1989) and Trade Secrets (distributed nationally through Heating, Cooling and Air Conditioning News, 1991-1994). He also penned an offbeat cartoon panel titled Quirks, that he self-syndicated between 1989 and 1991.
