Signe Wilkinson honored with World Press Freedom and Thomas Nast Award

Philadelphia Daily News editorial cartoonist Signe Wilkinson has taken home two awards this month. She was named the winner of the 15th World Press Freedom International Editorial Cartoon Competition. The topic this year was “Press Freedom has a value, but also a price.” I don’t know how many cartoons were in her portfolio, but the one below is cited with her announcement of winning.

She was also the recipient of this year’s Thomas Nast Award given out by Overseas Press Club of America. You can see her portfolio of 12 cartoons submitted on their website.

From the judges of the Thomas Nast Award;

Signe Wilkinson wades into the big story and emerges with fresh ideas, delivering an alternative take on events explored by others. Her original treatment provokes thinking on many of the most important issues of the day. The missile targeting terrorists also targets people living near them; the search for the wreckage of Malaysia Airlines flight 370 is made even more difficult by an ocean full of floating junk. Signe is often irreverent ? and funny.

Regarding her awards, she in an interview with her paper:

“It’s funny in a way, since the Daily News is such a hyper-local paper,” Wilkinson said. “We think of Camden as a foreign assignment. But at the same time, Daily News readers have broad interests, and not just Broad Street. They follow the international news and have opinions about it.”
