U.S. drops propaganda cartoon leaflets on ISIL

The US is dropping an illustration/cartoon on the city of Raqqa, the self-proclaimed capital of the Islamic State, to discourage new recruits (see cartoon above).

From USA Today:

WASHINGTON ? The Pentagon has launched a propaganda program in Syria aimed at creating fissures among Islamic State fighters by dropping 60,000 leaflets at the center of the militants’ power base.

The leaflets depict recruits to the Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, being fed into a meat grinder. The leaflets were created by personnel from Military Information Support Operations, previously known as psychological operations.

The leaflet drop represents the softer, less acknowledged side of the U.S. strategy to destroy the Islamic State.

A couple of thoughts: another example of how cartoons are use because of their universal language. The message is clear, even if you can’t read. Secondly, another example of how cartooning is at the forefront of the war against Islamic extremists.
