Archie set to die saving gay friend’s life

Back in April, it was announced that Archie was going to die heroically in a futuristic story-line “Life With Archie”. Now we learn that heroic manner is to take a bullet for his gay best friend.

From WILX.com:

Archie Comics co-CEO Jon Goldwater says he wants Andrews’ death to be a lesson about gun violence and a declaration of diversity in the new age of Archie Comics

Let me translate Goldwater’s statement: “We ran out of credible story-lines long ago, so we’ve got nothing left but shoving a story-line with as many sensitive issues like killing off a main character, LGBT, military and gun violence in an effort for anyone – ANYONE to give us free advertising. If this fails, our only other play is to convince Bill Watterson to scribble something – anything really – that we can create a story around.”

  1. If they cared so much about social issues they’d introduce Climate Change© into the plot line. The fact that they don’t only exposes their bigotry and hatred.

    Wow, that was easy.

  2. Part of me wants to say “how creative!” but all I feel is a deep sadness about this whole thing. I’ve never been a big fan of Archie, but I’ve always admired his success over many years. This concept and storyline feels like a betrayal to seventy plus years of Archie standards, it’s a ploy not a plot. Isn’t there enough of this kind of foulness in the world? Is it necessary to add more to it and in the pages of such a wholesome institution, no less? If Archie is going to die, let him go with some grace and dignity.

  3. Grace and dignity? Dude—-he’s dying a hero’s death! Taking a bullet to save someone else is about as dignified and graced a death as you can get in fiction.

I think people are overreacting to this. This is an alternate universe storyline, not the main Archie-verse. Is it an attempt to pump some freshness and relevancy into the franchise? Sure. Transparently. Is there anything that says it can’t be interesting and fun, anyway? Not in my book there ain’t!

And Jim, that “©” speaks volumes. [shaking head]

I don’t know why so many non-scientists feel confident in telling scientists that that they frauds and liars.
