10 NCS cartoonists tour Germany, Middle East with USO

Another group of National Cartoonists Society cartoonists have head out overseas with the USO to visit with troops serving in Germany and the Middle East. This year, the deployed cartoonists consisted of Todd Clark, Paul Combs, Bruce Higdon, Bill Janocha, T. Lewis, John Read III, Debbie Schafer, Rob Smith, Jr., Ed Steckley and Sam Viviano. When they return, they will have spent a week traveling and drawing for service men and women.

Regarding the trip Sam says, “In 35 years as a professional illustrator and cartoonist, I have never felt such satisfaction and pride in what I do as when I have sat and drawn — and spoken with — the men and women who are out here protecting our country. It has been not only a pleasure but a privilege to spend a little time with them and to do a little drawing as a sign of appreciation for their efforts.”

  1. As the very proud son of an Air Force officer who died in a V.A. hospital and is buried (with my mother) in a national cemetery, it was an honor to be able to participate in this “mission” to entertain American troops overseas. The USO treated us like celebrities, and every man, woman and child we spoke to and drew for in Germany and Southwest Asia was demonstratively appreciative of our visits.

What a thrill it is to be invited to use our talent to draw cartoons/caricatures as a way of saying “thank you” to those who serve!
