Interviewed: Kenosha Festival of Cartooning participants

The Kenosha Festival of Cartooning was last week. Here’s an radio interview featuring Tom Bancroft, Sandra Bell Lundy, Anne Hambrock, Paul Gilligan, John Hambrock, Michael Jantz, and Tom Richmond.

Direct MP3 download.

Paul has a small recap, Sandra has a lengthier one.

  1. Michael Jantz (Jantze?) wasn’t there, but Tom Bancroft was. Anne and I were also there in the booth, but not part of the group interview. Immediately following this, Scott Stantis was interviewed via telephone (and he joined the party later that day, coming up from Chicago).

The Festival was a lot of fun, by the way. Each guest cartoonist participated in one or more talks/panels which took place at area colleges and museums. There was an opening reception for the “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” exhibit, which is on display at Carthage College until November 5th, during which Paul, Sandra, both Toms and both Johns drew sketches for reception attendees. Aaron Johnson, whose “W.T. Duck” is part of the exhibit, also made an appearance.

  2. The current version of the interview is a little rough – you need to FF through a long musical intro and we had some technical difficulties heading into Scott’s phone portion. Also the state NPR station cut us off right at the hour in the archived version. I have been assured by the host that he can get me the complete interview with the problems edited out and I will be able to post it on the festival blog.

I’ll post here as soon as that has happened.

@ John – it was great to see you and the show looked AWESOME as always. The cartooning community owes you a tremendous debt for putting together this show and taking it all over the country for the past 18 months. Thank you so much for all you do for cartoonists!

And everyone mark your calendars – we’re looking at September 27,28 and 29 for next year.

A huge thank you to everyone who came out to meet the cartoonists and an even bigger thank you to all the participants. You made my job easy.

  4. I attended this event and it was fantastic! I had the pleasure of meeting some great cartoonists and seeing the amazing “One Fine Sunday” exhibit of original comic strips.
    Thanks to all of you!

  5. Got to witness the beginnings of this at the “One Fine Sunday” reception in Boston and am glad it went so well. There is real value for the medium in providing these opportunities for the public to look behind the curtain and see how it all works, especially in a setting that doesn’t make them feel they have to be total comic geeks to be comfortable there or to figure out what’s being presented.

The idea of simply deciding to set up an event like this, rather than waiting for a sponsored major event to come along, should be replicated more often. It’s not easy, but it matters. Great job!
