SuperF**kers, Johnny Boo and Dragon Puncher creator James Kochalka has been named Vermont’s first Cartoonist Laureate.
Like Vermont?s poet laureate, the cartoonist laureate is a person whose primary residence is Vermont, whose work manifests a high degree of excellence, who has produced a critically acclaimed body of work, and who has a long association with Vermont. James Kochalka was born in Springfield, Vermont in 1967 and graduated from the University of Vermont in 1989. He now lives in Burlington with his wife and two sons.
James is also a faculty member at the Center for Cartoon Studies.
States naming a cartoonist as the state’s Cartoonist Laureate has been done before. The most recent was Tundra creator Chad Carpenter of Alaska.
Congratulations James.
But if I’ve learned anything from The Daily Cartoonist in the last week, it’s that awards and accolades are meaningless.
I want to be Nebraska’s Cartoonist Laureate, but suspect people out here are thinking about a cartoonist’s lariet. Around my neck. Poor misinformed wretches.
You’ll notice that all those awards seem so meaningless until they notify you that you’re the one to be honored.
Betcha five bucks that most of us have our own special “I Love Me” wall back home in our studios. I know I do. So there.
James Kochalka does great work.
He deserves this recognition.
He has been around for a while, and he’s always been really good at self-promotion. Good for him.

A. Cartoonists working in small markets, do, indeed, have to be more cautious and thoughtful about commenting on real people.
B. Especially when the friends of those real people are vindictive psychos. Wow! And people complained about the comments section on THIS website!
