Most beloved, obscure holiday TV specials

CNN has a round up of obscure, yet beloved holiday TV specials. Included in the list:

“The Star Wars Holiday Special”
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” (not so obscure)
“Claymation Christmas Celebration”
“Batman Returns” (not sure why this is even on their list)
“Christmas Comes to PacLand”
“Santa Claus Conquers the Martians”/”Santa Claus” (1959)
“Futurama” (holiday episodes)
“Pee-wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special”
“Gremlins”
“The Year Without a Santa Claus”/”‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”
“He-Man and She-Ra: A Christmas Special”
“A Wish for Wings that Work”

“A Wish for Wings that Work” is based of Berkeley Breathed’s Outland comic strip. It featured voice talent from Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman.

Looking over the list, I’ve seen 3-4. I wish I could forget 2-3. I’d be curios to see the “Star Wars Holiday Special,” but I’m afraid it would ruin whatever warm feelings I had for the franchise before Lucas came out with the prequels.

  1. Did anyone ever see “The Great Santa Claus Switch.” I believe this was aired only once back in 1969 or 1970 with Art Carney kidnapping Santa, elves and evil looking characters were Muppets by Jim Henson? I saw when I was 6 or 7 and have always remembered it being very funny and kind of bizarre, but never saw it again on TV. Anyone know if it can be located on VHS or DVD?
