Next Great Cartoonist Contest top 10 posted

Michael Cavna has posted the top 10 in his America’s Next Great Cartoonist Contest! The contest received about 500 submissions total and the which was narrowed the field to a hundred (you can see them here). The panel of judges then narrowed the field to the top ten. The top 10 include:

  • Hoxwinder Hall by Daniel Boris
  • Real Time by Bob Erskine
  • Galapagos by Dave Gau
  • Over Nite Sensation by Dave Mitchell
  • Forever Endeavor by Thomas Mullany
  • The Rock Head by Paul Scolaro
  • Stupid Inventor by Zachary Snyder
  • Big Daddy by Joe Sutliff
  • Old Blugg Inn by Mark Thompson
  • Imogen Quest by Olivia Walch

Voting ends on Tues., June 22, at 5 p.m. (EST)

Correction: I reported that the contest garnered a little over a 100 submissions, but Michael Cavna, who is heading the contest, notes in the comments that there were about 500 submission total. The above report has been modified to reflect the new information.

  1. Thanks for the item, Alan. And I should note: On first pass, we narrowed the field from roughly 500 submissions. (Took a round or two — and some caffeinated nights — to cull it to 100 or so.)

  2. Odd Bluff Inn is listed incorrectly. I noticed that right away because that one is one of my favorites!

  3. Do we get to see the commentary from the judges at all? What’s the point of having this all-star lineup if we don’t hear anything from them?

    Congrats to the finalists!

  4. opps…typo… I meant Old Bluff Inn. At least that’s how it’s listed on WP’s site. It’s wrong somewhere.

  5. 500 submissions!

Phew!, now I do not feel so bad for not making the top 10. Hopefully the Washington Post will do this again. I’ll make more Cheese for next year…

  6. I just feel VERY fortunate that I made it to the Finals…
You can see the Judges comments under each strip. Like in this link: http://tinyurl.com/2cq8jju

I’m still in shock that Stan Lee likes MY comic stip!
STAN LEE!? Are you kidding me?!
    LOL!

  7. Congrats Dan – and even though I know precious little about the technical merit of cartoon writing, I luuuuv the alligator and am looking forward to seeing more of him πŸ™‚

  8. I am still in total shock that I made it into the Final 10!

I first heard about the contest from this site, so thank you Alan for running the story, and thanks to Michael and everyone at The Washington Post for having such a great contest!

All the Finalists and other entries are so amazing I don’t know how you guys were able to narrow it down, but I’m surprised and honored to have made it into the Final 10!

Check out my entry and let me know what you think!
(And if you like it, please vote for me!)

  9. @ Mari-Louise: Thanks very much!

@ Zachary: Congrats on also making the finals! Best of luck to you! The fact that there were around 500 entries is pretty humbling…

  10. @Daniel Thanks! Congrats to you too!

I agree, I looked though all the amazing submissions that didn’t make the 10 and feel a bit guilty….

Still, I hope we both make it into the Final 5! (After that, though, all bets are off and it’s every person for themselves! Just kidding…)

  11. @ Zachary: Heh heh…This thing is pretty much beyond our control now.

    @ Rick: Good one! LOL!

  12. CONGRATS to all of the amazing artists who made it through. Good luck to everyone involved

  13. Hey, congratulations to the top ten and all, but the FUNNIEST strip was one of the rejected ones.

Everyone needs to go to http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/gallery/2010/06/15/GA2010061505167.html and choose the “View Thumbs” option. Then go to rejected toon #102 and check out “Bob and Ivan” by Phil Witte. I dare you not to do a spit take (beverage not included). I laughed longest and loudest than at any other strip in the contest (including my own).

Phil, dude, that was awesome. Sorry you lost. You need to submit that to MAD–I guarantee you they’ll publish it!

  14. I don’t get it. I went to the YouTube link that Rick posted with David Lynch saying “total f*cking bullsh*t”, but I don’t see the relevance here. What is Rick Stromosky trying to say?
    Anybody?

  15. Nope. Sorry, Rick. I don’t get what you’re trying to say. Maybe you should just say it.

  16. @Jesse I can’t fully judge because I’ve only seen clips of The Room, but I think on principle only movies more than 25 years old can qualify for pure B-Movie gold…

which is why I offer Teenagers From Outer Space!

    (one of my favs)

(I guess The Room, Troll 2, and Mega Shark Vs. Giant Octopus are the exceptions that prove the rule?)

  17. Well, I’m bummed.

I didn’t even make it into the top 100.
I think I’ll just take my pen and ink set out to the back yard and give it a quiet burial….sniff…sigh….

Congratulations to all of you who made it in the Top 10!
    Good luck!

  18. @Duane, the more you try the more stuff like this rolls off of you. Don’t be bummed. It’s all a part of the game and contests in particular should be viewed as fun exercises more than anything.

And never bury a good pen and ink set!

To the top ten, congratulations and enjoy every moment of it!

  19. @Duane:

If it’s any consolation, there is no “top 100.” The photo gallery is simply a sampling that the contest producers compiled.

In other words: Long live your pen & ink set. And keep on drawin’!

    –M.C.

  20. Don’t get discouraged! I am 99th in the galley and feel bad that I did so poorly but I am taking this as a lesson that I have to push myself harder and do a better strip. Hopefully though if I really stink someone will tell me soon before I make a complete fool of myself! πŸ™‚

If you need encouragement, set up a page on Facebook like I did for Just Say Cheese and I promise you that the people on that site will help you as they have helped me. The best way to get better is though constructive criticism and a little praise.

  21. @Jim: The Bob and Ivan cartoon was terrible. I can’t think of any way to rescue that gag to make it even remotely funny.

  22. Well, I guess you can change the parasitic twin into a talking animal and then it’d be hilarious. There are not enough talking animals in strips.

  23. Hey dan its not only about your alligator all your characters stand out and your strip is amazing….and i think rowdy can repesent the army like dick tracy is for the police….
