Former Commercial Appeal editorial cartoonist Bill Day was named the winner of the 2010 Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award for editorial cartooning. The award honors reporting on issues of “human rights, social justice, and the power of individual action in the United States and around the world.”
Regarding his entry, the judges wrote, “Cartoonist Bill Day sheds light on the continuing problem of infant mortality in America, especially among minority populations. His unusual special project creates clear and easily-readable cartoons, raising public awareness, partly through a grassroots movement that led to legislation and policy improvements.”
Bill’s work is still syndicated through United Feature Syndicate.
First Fiore and now Day…have won ed toon contests without having to share any of the acclaim with a print newspaper employer.
SO now the question is, how soon before all the contests are won by non-staffed newspaper ed toonists?

Congrats to Bill! Could not have happened to a nicer guy. While I have yet to meet him in person, he has sent many kind words of encouragement my way.

Congratulations are certainly in order and well deserved. I stopped entering contests 2 years ago because I wasn’t sure if the judges paid any attention to laid off/freelance cartoonists. You have given me hope. Unfortunately the numbers on the laid off list will just continue to grow. Bill and Steve, I think we should get all of the laid off cartoonists together sometime and talk survival stories.
