Eliot off to Thailand for Habitat for Humanity

Stone Soup creator Jan Eliot, fresh off of a featured guest appearance at an international cartoon exhibition in Algiers and speaking engagements in Morocco, is on her way to Thailand on November 15 to take part in Habitat for Humanity’s Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project.

Eliot will travel to the Chiang Mai province of northern Thailand to join Habitat for Humanity work crews composed of members of the Chiang Mai community, celebrities and approximately 3,000 volunteers. Volunteers will work alongside former U.S. President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn, during a weeklong build that will erect 82 homes for low-income families. The number of homes being built honors the 82nd birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Eliot will be part of a Women Build crew that includes Janet Huckabee, wife of Republican politician and television personality Mike Huckabee; CARE co-founder Beth Kuenstler; Reverend Shannon Ledbetter, head of Liverpool Habitat for Humanity; and Lisa Marie Nickerson, Associate Director of Women Build / Habitat for Humanity International. Of the 82 homes being built, five will be Women Build houses. Women Build is a Habitat program specifically geared toward teaching construction skills to female volunteers. To date, the Women Build program has constructed more than 1,500 houses around the world.

Eliot has contributed to Habitat for Humanity in the past by creating Women Build t-shirt designs, illustrations for the Girls Build educational modules, as well as a t-shirt design for Operation Home Delivery, Habitat’s rebuilding initiative in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Eliot created a souvenir postcard featuring Stone Soup characters Val and Joan for the Chiang Mai project.
