BBC Radio 4 looks at Calvin and Hobbes (Updated)

Phill Jupitus, from the BBC Radio 4 program, looks at the phenomenon of cartoonist Bill Watterson and his feature Calvin and Hobbes. He interviews Lee Salem about early reactions from papers and readers (including a small number of complaints). The program (28 minutes long) can be downloaded or streamed over the interview.

Phill sets out to discover more about the characters and the man behind them. In Watterson’s absence, Jupitus heads to Oxford to speak with artists, merchandisers, booksellers and philosophers to find out what makes the strip so popular, over a decade after Watterson drew the final frame.

UPDATE: The episode is no longer posted on the Radio 4 website. You can still download the episode on iTunes.
