Viral marketing videos to sell comic book collections

Came across this video this morning to hype the release of Stephan Pastis’ 12th Pearls Before Swine comic collection. It’s an excellent example of viral marketing to sell comic book collections.

Very funny, Stephan. Seriously, what does John Glynn do all day at Universal Press besides make videos for rival comic strips and post on his blog?Title: Viral marketing videos to sell comic book collections

  1. Tom Gammill started something great when he ‘merged’ the idea of a strip with videos of the ‘toonist himself. I’m looking forward to more artists doing this, stretching the medium to include the stripper and the strip!

Imagine if Gary Larson had this technology in 1984? Or Shultz in 1965? Although Breathed and Watterson might not have done this type of thing, it’s fun to think of what other past cartoonists would have come up with like this!

I wanna see Darby Conley or Paul Gilligan do one next!

  2. Wow – that was about 7 1/2 minutes too long. This is what happens when non-comedians try to attempt comedy. That lame attempt at shamelessly mimicing Ricky Gervais fell with a giant thud.

And someone please tell Stephan to look at his birth certificate (40 yo?) and get over the whole “19 year-old slacker” uniform. I’m starting to feel embarrassed for him.

At this point, who does he need to impress?

  4. Drew,
Well, man I had to Google Ricky Gervais. But I think everyone and their dog knows who Mr. Pastis is.

I applaud him for trying to stretch the envelope and bring attention to the comics using other media. He may not be Steve Carell, but it was a noble attempt.

As for the slacker thing, he’s become very wealthy essentially drawing stick figures – and Einstein spit on the floor! Geniuses I say, geniuses!

Oh man, that was the funniest G’damn thing I’ve read all year. Next time you’re at a social gathering, make that same proclamation. I’m dying to hear the response.

Now, who’s this here “Steve Carell” fella you mentioned?
