Garry Trudeau awarded President’s Award for Excellence

On the surface one would wonder why the Vietnam Veteran’s of America would ever give an unapologetic anti-war activist, Garry Trudeau an award, but last week, Garry received the President’s Award for Excellence in the Arts for his work to support the soldiers who have little control over where and when they are deployed around the world.

His anti-war rants in the 36-year history of the strip “never translated to disrespect for the soldiers,” he said, because his jokes were directed at “the upper echelons ? over which soldiers have no control.”

Those in attendance Friday said they’ve followed nearly every moment of the lives of the characters in “Doonesbury,” especially B.D. ? the football player turned Vietnam veteran and Gulf War soldier deployed to Iraq again recently and now experiencing bouts of post-traumatic stress disorder.

Earlier this year, Garry was recognized by the Pentagon for using his character B.D. to bring attention to servicemen and women who have been injured during active service.

  1. They gave Trudeau a “President’s” award? President of what?… “The Hate and Dispise Anything American Association” ? Trudeau is a hate filled anti-American bastard who takes insane pleasure in making America (not just our current administration or the military leasdership) look like stupid ignoramuses. He has gained “fame” for his “comic stip” because other anti-American who have also gained some fame for the same reason have endorsed him. His anti-patriotic ways should be criticized .. not praised. He is NOT and American. He is an athiest and hate filled.

  2. I agree. Trudeau has been spewing unamerican hatred for way too long. I don’t mind someone disagreeing with the government, but Trudeau is simply an unamerican moron. His strip is tired, old and boring. They need to stop feeding his ego.

  4. Wow, all this hatred talk is depressing. So depressing It made me want to do a not so uplifting tribute toon to Mr. Clark (Director of A Christmas Story) on Easter. It’s posted at that link up there on my moniker.

  6. Thoughtless dolts like Jeff and Ed are the reason we have the Bush/Cheney disaster machine in office and the reason the world has gone completely to hell. How great it would be if people could get a brain.

Critical discussion like the kind Trudeau has been engaged in for so long is patriotic because it keeps an eye on government malfeasance.

If Jeff and Ed want to rubber stamp everything govt. does, I’d recommend they go live in Putin’s Russia. I’ll be more than happy to buy their tickets out of here.

  8. Well said, American.

  12. Hey, I am former Green Beret I am the first to question government (it’s totally out of control and acting entirely unconstitutional) and I ain’t no fan of Bush (he should be impeached), but there is a difference in questioning the government and sedition.

Is Trudeau committing sedition? I don’t think so, but he really has never offered any type of debate that triggers critical thinking.

If he was more middle of the road instead of left (or right) I would respect him more.

The thing that really bothers me about the neo-patriots is they really have no idea what patriotism is. How many here have even read the Constitution? If you have, then you’d understand what true patriotism is and what Trudeau should be writing about.

  14. Jeff, do YOU know what patriotism is?

Apparently you think it means reading the Constitution.

    Yes, I’ve read the Constitution.

But here’s a bit of info for you. Patriotism isn’t about “reading the constitution.”

I believe it’s about fighting for the liberties the Constitution was designed to protect. One of those liberties is freedom of speech, which Trudeau is exercising, like what he’s saying or not.

A true patriot fights against those who would seek to limit those rights, and Trudeau fights that war with his pen.

A true patriot doesn’t go around telling other people they’re unpatriotic if they haven’t read the Constitution. That’s what true ignorami do, as Mike points out.

  16. Please keep it civil gentlemen, this is a good discussion, but I’ll shut it off if we can’t keep the comments from getting personal.

    Thanks,

  18. Many ordinary citizens who wish to hold their elected officials accountable are often accused of not supporting or loving their country. There are a couple of ways that one can show love for their country. One way is how a child loves their Mother. Mommy is all good, I love Mommy no matter what. Mommy can do no wrong. Whatever she does is always right and if you don’t agree with that then you’re bad and I hate you.

There is another way to love your country, like an adult would love one’s spouse. You love them and because you love them you expect them to always do the right thing, to be fair and just, to be open to criticism and consider other points of view without feeling threatened. To always tell the truth and when they make a mistake, own up to it and correct it. And when they are wrong, to admit it and strive to be their best. It’s up to each of us to decide which is the better approach.

  20. Garry Trudeau, Great cartoonist, yes. I personally liked Mr. Butts. I never really got into the strip though, but he is always quite topical and definitely spurs great debates. Kudos to Trudeau, Doonesbury whether you like it or not is a great American Culture type strip. I also applaud his work. Seriously if it wasn’t that great it wouldn’t still be around.
