Aaron McGruder takes on ‘Esquires’ State of the American Black Man

Aaron McGruder recently was asked by Esquire magazine his opinion of the state of the American black man.  Instead of a Boondocks cartoon, they received a 20 question questionnaire. Some of the questions Aaron asks are: “What cost more? Your house or your chain?” and “What is your Katrina status? A: Displaced by Katrina, or B: Inconvenienced by family displaced by Katrina.”

When Esquire asked McGruder to comment on his submission he replied, “I don?t explain the jokes. That?s not a good thing to get into. It is what it is.”
Aaron’s questionnaire will be part of the July edition.

  1. I just read Aaron McGruder’s State of the American Black Man questionnaire and couldn’t stop laughing….especially when I came upon questions #10a, 10b, and 10c.

  3. Very funny survey. I wonder how many people seriously took the survey, just completly missing the joke. That would be even funnier.

  5. I’m disappointed that even one person finds this questionnaire funny. Racism is not funny no matter who says it. If this questionnaire was put out in a “white” mainstream figure ten kinds of hell would raised. Can someone explain why it’s funny if it’s put out by a black man? Perpetuating racist stereotypes do nothing but help re-enforce those stereotypes and deepen the racism so rampant in our country.

  7. Cartoonists breath stereotypes everyday unless it’s an animal, alien or inanimate object. How could you stereotype a talking animal? He’s atypical because he talks.

  9. Lucas…you know you thought it was funny…
you didnt look at it and say “this…this is racist!” it wasnt meant to be racist. a lot of Aaron McGruder’s work is surrounded around the social and socioeconomic flaws of the black commuinty…and how it can be changed.
    his show is awesome…
    his comic strip is brilliant…
    so…
    lighten up.
    laugh.
    thats what its there for.
