McCoy Brothers getting good press with their Reuben wins

The Belleville News-Democrat has a glowing report of Glenn and Gary McCoy’s win at the Reuben Awards this last weekend.

Saturday night, each man took home a plaque at the 60th Annual Reuben Awards Banquet in Chicago. Glenn McCoy beat out his brother, Gary McCoy, to win the gag cartoons division. Gary McCoy won the greeting card division.

“Me and my brother both won,” said Glenn, 40, of Swansea. “I’m pretty sure that hasn’t happened before.”

When Glenn won, clad in a pink tuxedo with ruffles, his big brother Gary, wearing a blue tuxedo with ruffles, carried him on stage piggy-back style. Glenn said he would rather not win awards by snatching them away from his brother.

Glenn’s previous Reubens include newspaper comic strip cartoonist of the year award for his syndicated cartoon, “The Duplex,” three greeting cards cartoonist of the year awards, two magazine cartoonist of the year awards, and an editorial cartoonist of the year award.

Gary, who was nominated for the first time this year, joked that his brother only needed one more award to finish tiling his bathroom floor.

Universal Press has also posted a press release regarding the McCoy wins.

  1. The NCS is a bad joke. The Reubens is all about the NCS mafia like the McCoys and Piraro giving each other awards so they can get good press like this and has nothing to do with actually helping the cartooning industry.

After six years as a member of the NCS I finally gave up on it and quit and I’d encourage cartoonists, especially up and comers just getting by, not to waste your money either.

  4. Who are you, Art Who? And what’s your problem with the NCS exactly? They just seem to be an organization for pro-cartoonist that support each other morally. What’s wrong with that?

  7. I have no problem with the McCoys and Piraros as they’re truly talented … it’s some of the other nominees and past winners that are of such inferior quality in comparison to other properities that make the NCS Awards ridiculous.

  9. Awards are very subjective…someones brilliant genius is another persons hack. It’s always unfortunate when the disgruntled publicly denegrate the work of others on forums such as this especially when their opinion is just as subjective as the juries that give out awards. It’s kind of an excercise in futility.

As for Art quitting the NCS, perhaps both entities are the much better for it.

  12. No doubt any art form (not Art) is subjective … but I think there’s usually a consensus of opinion about what qualifies for award-winning art.

The Oscar probably won’t go to Rob Schneider in the near future … but God only knows who’ll be nominated by the NCS next year.
