Student cartooning awards announced

Congrats to a bunch of aspiring cartoonists. From a press release off of Universal Presses web site:

Student Cartoonists’ Awards Announced

Kansas City, MO (12/05/2005) Four first place winners were selected among many aspiring young cartoonists who participated in the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) /Associate Collegiate Press Cartooning (ACP) Awards, co-sponsored by Universal Press Syndicate.

The contest is open to college and high school students with categories in editorial cartoons and comic strip/panel. The winning cartoonists for 2004/2005 drew about racial diversity, current events, video games and alien abduction with their own styles and viewpoints. First-place winners received $500.

First-place winner for the college Editorial Cartoon Category was Conor Geoghegan from Mount Royal College in Calgary, Alberta, whose cartoon used historical perspective to spoof the bans on gay marriage. Second place went to Sakura M. Christmas of Harvard University, who depicted George W. Bush handing Condoleeza Rice a mallet for a ?Foreign Policy Smack Attack.?

Nate Creekmore of David Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn., received first place in the Comic Strip Category for his depiction of a pair of volunteers using free chocolate and vanilla cupcakes to conduct an unofficial survey on race issues. Second-place winner Michelle Gruben from the University of Texas, Dallas, drew a cartoon balancing a mathematics exam with the meaning of life.

Winners of the NSPA Cartooning Awards for high school students are as follows: First-place winner for 2004/2005?s high school Editorial Cartoon Category was Julian Callos from Hoover High School in Glendale, California. Callos? cartoon depicted Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator regalia struggling to protect California from the threat of budget cuts. Second place went to Sagebelle Wu, Taipei American School in Taiwan, for her portrayal of outsourcing.

Winners of the high school Comic Strip/Panel Category were David Essman, of Marquette High School, Chesterfield, Mo., who received first place for a strip about seeking a date for homecoming. Second place was received by Lisa Gibson, from Briarcrest Christian School in Eads, Tenn., for her strip about Valentine?s Day.
