Dueling Banjo blog becomes exhibit

The Dueling Banjo blog showcasing various illustrators drawing on the theme of “banjo playing pigs” will quickly become an exhibit. The exhibit will open at on April 1 and run through April 29 at the Terra Nova Gallery in Provo Utah. If you’ve participated on the blog visit the announcement or contact Stacy Curtis or Guy Francis for more information on where to send your artwork for the exhibit. Artwork has to be received by March 25.

Ronald Searle’s private drawings now on display

The Cartoon Museum in London is now displaying private drawings created by Ronald Searle that he drew while his wife was battling cancer.

In 1969, Monica was diagnosed with breast cancer and given only a few months to live. She was offered a course of what in those days was seen as an experimental form of chemotherapy. Searle, regarded by his peers as the greatest living cartoonist, recalls his reaction: “I had only my talent for drawing … so I drew.”

He gave her the Mrs Mole drawings as she lay in her hospital bed in Paris, one for each of her treatments, showing Monica’s alter ego cheerful and busy in a setting heavily based on their own home in a village in Provence.

The drawings were full of details from their domestic life: her grandmother also pottered about carrying a basket of keys, and in the renovation of their own house they had recently discovered a bundle of huge, ancient keys. Monica recalled: “I would lie in bed, living the life he created in the pictures.”

His wife survived the cancer. The drawings are part of a breast cancer charity awareness effort. Exhibit runs through March 20.

The ToonSeum welcomes bloggers, tweeters, podcasters, and local media for a special evening event.

As a museum of cartoon and comic art we recognize the important role both traditional and new media play in creating a fan based culture. We want to recognize your contribution to our success and give you a special sneak preview at what’s next for 2011. We will be unvieling new peices added to our collection and photos are encouraged.

Food, beer, wine, prizes, cartoons and special celebrity guests will be on hand for this media only event.

KAL returns from Russia; off to San Francisco

Kevin Kallaugher AKA “KAL” is back from St. Petersburg, Russia where 43 of his cartoons were part of an exhibit sponsored by the US Consulate about American and Russian cartoons. He’s posted photos on his blog.

In a related news, KAL will also have a show of his work at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco. Exhibit opens November 6 and runs through March 13. There will be an opening reception on Nov 12.

Nick Galifianakis exhibit opens tomorrow

Washington D.C. based illustrator Nick Galifianakis has an exhibit of his work opening tomorrow night and runs through Nov 14. Nick, who provides cartoons for the Carolyn Hax advice column in the Washington Post, also has a new book due out entitled, “If You Loved Me, You’d Think This Was Cute: Uncomfortably True Cartoons About You.” He’ll have a book signing at the Falls Church Arts Gallery Nov 11.

One Fine Sunday exhibit to end in Toonseum

Just got word from John Read, curator of the One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages exhibit and not to mention editor/publisher of Stay Tooned! magazine. He tells me it is now confirmed, that his traveling exhibit will run through December 2011 closing in the Toonseum in Pittsburg. The show is next heading to Marceline, MO.

Speaking of Stay Tooned!, John tells me it’s ready to go to press. This issue is themed around “Mike” – all the featured cartoonists are named Mike/Michael. Cover is drawn by Michael Ramirez and features other Mikes such as: Maslin, Lynch, Cope, Arnold, Edholm, Shapiro, Marland and Jantze.

Cartoon Art Museum to host Comics 4 Comix

Comics and comix collide as the funnies meet the funny in the sixth annual fundraiser and silent art auction for San Francisco’s Cartoon Art Museum. Join the Bay Area’s funniest folk for a night of food, drink, and entertainment, and bid on original art by some of today’s brightest stars in comics. This year Comics 4 Comix takes place on Tuesday, September 7th 2010, at San Francisco’s famed Punchline Comedy Club, 444 Battery Street. The doors open at 6:30pm, and the show starts at 8pm. General admission tickets for this benefit cost $20. Tickets may be purchased in advance from Livenation’s website (livenation.com) or at the door on the night of the event.

The Cartoon Art Museum will host an all-star cast of stand-up comics for this event, featuring headliner comedian and Simpsons writer Dana Gould, as well as local comedians Joe Klocek, Mike Meehan, and host Michael Capozzola, comedian and creator of the comic strip Surveillance Caricatures in the San Francisco Chronicle’s 96 hours section. Accommodations for our headliner are being provided by the InterContinental San Francisco. Performances will begin at 8 pm. In addition to getting a dose of high comedy, attendees will have the opportunity to bid on and peruse original comic strip art from popular local and national cartoonists, including Dan Piraro (Bizarro), Lynn Johnston (For Better or For Worse), Michael Jantze (The Norm), Jack Davis (Mad Magazine), Keith Knight (The K Chronicles), and much, much more.

Traveling exhibit of For Better or For Worse planned

An exhibit to showcase Lynn Johnston’s career as an artist and creator of For Better or For Worse is in the works. The exhibit will launch in Northern Ontario and then into the US.

In related news, Lynn is working on sequel to “Farley Follows his Nose.” The new children’s book will be entitled, “Farley and the Lost Bone.”

A peek at One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages

John Read, editor of “Stay Tooned!” and curator of the “One Fine Sunday in the Funny Pages” exhibit has graciously sent me photos of the exhibit as seen in Jackson, Mississippi – the busiest mall in Mississippi he adds. He’s using a former jewelry store – hence the cases. Exhibit runs through August and then it’s off to the Disney Toonfest in Marceline, Missouri. The exhibit takes over 70 Sunday comics that appeared last April 11.

Dave Coverly exhibit opens today in Wisconsin

A traveling exhibit of Dave Coverly’s work is opening in Wisconsin Rapids, WI. The exhibit is entitled “Speed Bump: The Comic World of Dave Coverly” and runs through September. Dave will also attend a public presentation in September for a book signing and to meet the public.
