Between 1951 and 1953, legendary animator Chuck Jones directed his “Hunting Trilogy,” three short Looney Tunes that are among the classics of the form. The premise of each short is simple: (1) The dimwitted Elmer Fudd tiptoes his way into the forest, (2) Daffy Duck tries to persuade Elmer that it’s wabbit season, while Bugs Bunny tries to persuade Elmer that it’s really duck season, (3) Daffy is outmaneuvered and takes some lead to the face.

Indie Wire reports that a second TinTin movie is already in the works before the first has yet to open here in the U.S.

It seems like the domestic success or failure of ‘Tintin,’ which doesn’t open on our shores until December 21st, isn’t even a factor at this point – they’re moving forward whether or not Americans get behind the movie. It’s kind of a ballsy move but it also sort of reminds us of Luc Besson making those awful ‘Arthur & the Invisible’ animated movies in France even though the first one bombed here.

I don’t know if it’s ballsy. In the big scheme of things, by the time a script is written (February or March of next year), they’ll know if there is a market for the second film. If it does well, then they’re well on their way to get the film into Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg schedules. Otherwise, the script gets filed away.

The British film archive discovered an episode of “Hungry Hobos” – an animation short by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks dated 1927. It features the Oswald character which is considered by most to be the prototype of Mickey Mouse.

Robert Dewar, commercial director of Huntley Film Archives, one of Britain’s biggest independent film libraries, said he and colleagues found the only known surviving copy of Hungry Hobos during a routine cataloguing exercise earlier this year.

“We’ve got more films than you can imagine,” he told Reuters, adding that only about 40,000 of the archive’s 80,000 films are fully accounted for.

…

Amanda Huntley of the archive added: “When we checked this film we couldn’t quite believe our eyes. For an archive, finding a lost masterpiece is incredible — you just don’t think it will happen to you.”

What was it like when Winsor McCay screened his animated film GERTIE THE DINOSAUR for his New York Tribune cartoonist pals? Allan Holtz shares this article from the February 23, 1914 Tribune. The film had just premiered at Chicago’s Palace Theater a few weeks earlier, on February 8, 1914. The original film consisted of Mr.McCay., live and in person, interacting with the onscreen Gertie. Before the end of the year, William Fox approached McCay to distribute it nationally. The result was the creation of a new live-action set up sequence for the animation.
