A Century of Wayne Thiebaud – Happy Birthday!

Famed pop artist Wayne Thiebaud was born on October 15, 1920
and celebrates his 100th birthday today!

To celebrate the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, Ca. is presenting Wayne Thiebaud 100: Paintings, Prints, and Drawings, an extensive, celebratory retrospective featuring the full range of the Sacramento artist’s achievements on canvas and on paper in an exhibition on view at the Crocker Oct. 11 through Jan. 3, 2021.

Opening shortly before Thiebaud’s 100th birthday, the career-spanning exhibition of 100 objects made over more than 70 years (1947-2019) is the largest survey of Thiebaud’s work in two decades. Works drawn from the Crocker’s holdings and the collection of the Thiebaud Family and Foundation, many of which have never been shown publicly, as well as the artist’s newest body of work, circus clowns, reveal an extraordinary, expansive practice.

More information at the Mountain Democrat.

San Francisco and The Chronicle is also celebrating:

Thiebaud may well be the most popular California painter ever. He’s recognized as one of the major American art figures of the second half of the 20th century.

The name is Swiss, and the accurate pronunciation is “Tee-bo.”

In celebration we thought we would present our own gallery of Wayne’s work from his World War Two days. Stationed at Mather Field in 1944 Wayne contributed to the base’s Wing Tips weekly newspaper. Below are some samples.

Happy Birthday Wayne!
