Sunday Funnies – some January 13 notes

The big news is the premiere of the Little Oop Sunday comic strip by Joey Alison Sayers and Jonathan Lemon.

This raises two questions in my mind:
First – does this strip require a new entry in any comic strip listings or does it just get a note in the Alley Oop entry? Second – will the illustration that accompanies the new Little Oop logo remain the same or change weekly? That second will soon be answered.

By the way, the response to the new Alley Oop has approached Luann proportions as far as comments posted at GoComics. Will that continue?

Can You Solve the Mystery?
The latest installment of Dick Tracy’s Minit Mysteries, by Donnie Pitchford and Joe Staton, concludes today. But before you read it go back to the December 30th beginning of the case and try your hand at being a detective.

Just how many DAYS did Dan Piraro spend drawing today’s Bizarro?

Unlike Batom Comics, I guess Atomik Komix don’t get cover credits in Funky Winkerbean.

Thought of the day comes from Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis.

Laugh of the day comes from Free Range by Bill Whitehead.

Just a note for researchers: January 5, 2019 was the final In The Bleachers daily panel with the “MOORE + Benz” signature. Beginning January 7, 2019 the daily panel is signed only “Benz”. The Sunday feature remains (so far) unsigned.

  1. The Dick Tracy “Minit Mystery,” despite its similarity to “Minute Mysteries” and “Two-Minute Mysteries” is not a challenge to the reader this time, but simply a guest-written two-week continuity. Several readers and the guest writer informed me of this serially after I joked about a solution.

The strip’s entertaining, of course, but don’t go in thinking that Ellery Queen will turn to the audience just before the last day and say “You now have all the clues, reader! Who do YOU think dunnit?”

Though, come to think of it, I wouldn’t be surprised if Ellery Queen did show up in the strip some day. They’re fond of bringing in guest stars, and Staton’s art on such occasions is always a joy to behold.

  2. I’d say Lil Oop gets a separate line. It’s a totally different situation, as far as I can tell.

  3. Thanks for mentioning the Dick Tracy “Minit Mystery” wrap-up! It was a fun ride. I really appreciate everyone who commented, praised, complained, whatever! It was a great experience for me. Bottom line, I wanted it to be a fun 15 days. Thanks!
