Michael Ramirez Joins Review-Journal Staff

Updated with today’s (September 16) Las Vegas Review-Journal introductory article, but mostly because I couldn’t resist the above fantastic cartoon of Ramirez arriving in Las Vegas.

“It’s good that, naturally, I’m an evil, demented individual,” Ramirez jokes. We think.

“That helps — having a twisted sense of humor.”

As such, Ramirez tends to provoke laughter and outrage in equal measure. The very first cartoon of his to ever get published had some of his fellow students demanding an apology.

It was not forthcoming.

Original September 14, 2018 post:

In a very pleasant reversal of the current trend the Las Vegas Review-Journal has signed Michael Ramirez as staff cartoonist!

Two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning political cartoonist Michael Ramirez has joined the Review-Journal editorial page staff. His cartoons will appear five days per week beginning Sunday.

Ramirez started working at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis in 1990. He won his first editorial cartooning Pulitzer Prize — journalism’s highest honor — in 1994. He worked at the Los Angeles Times from 1997 to 2005 and then joined Investor’s Business Daily as senior editor and editorial cartoonist, where he won another Pulitzer in 2008.

Ramirez has also won the National Cartoonists Society’s editorial cartoon division award five times and the Sigma Delta Chi Award, from the Society of Professional Journalists, three times.

Not mentioned in that resumé is that Michael has won the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award a couple years ago, to add to those divisional awards.

Michael knew political cartooning was for him when

After receiving a much larger response from a cartoon featuring student election candidates than from any written editorial, Ramirez said, he began to recognize the impact “silly drawings” can have.

“We had three days worth of protests over this picture, and I was called to apologize to the school. And I thought that was great.”

What more joy could an editorial cartoonist ask for than to have a drawing cause a ruckus.

Here’s the Review-Journal article introducing Michael, and here’s Michael’s homepage.

Note that the article says Ramirez joins the R-J staff come Sunday, but Michael’s latest cartoon, dated September 12, already has the Review-Journal dateline with a copy of the newspaper prominently displayed:

Unknown if The Daily Signal will grab their Ramirez cartoons from this Review-Journal gig, and not sure if Michael will contribute new cartoons for The Weekly Standard magazine.
