Last month The Society of Professional Journalists announced the recipients of the 2017 Sigma Delta Chi Awards for excellence in journalism. Winning for Editorial Cartooning in the 100,001+ circulation category was Clay Bennett of the Chattanooga Times Free Press, Winning for Editorial Cartooning in the 1-100,00 circulation category was Walt Handelsman of The Advocate. Also winners in the Audio Slide Show category were cartoonists Mike Cavna and Tom Racine of The Washington Post with their “For Art’s Sake: The Newspaper My Father Gave Me”

The AAEC reported that “Steve Sack is this year’s winner of the James Aronson Cartooning with a Conscience Award. The recognition is part of the annual Aronson Awards for Social Justice Journalism.” More at

Mike Rhode tells us that come May 22 Ruben Bolling and his Tom the Dancing Bug will get the 2018 Robert F. Kennedy Award for Excellence in Journalism Award.

Speaking of future awards, Brendon Burford and Rick Stromoski will be honored with the Silver T-Square at The Reuben’s Dinner.
And as long as we’ve (kinda) brought up comic strips: Tony DePaul and Mike Manley’s The Phantom story “Farewell to the Deep Woods” (2016) has been voted Sweden’s Best Phantom story of 2017. The story was reprinted in an Egmont comic book there.
