Forget my earlier post. Pastis, Watterson strips auction off for $74k!!

LAST night was the final day of the Stephan Pastis, Bill Watterson Pearls Before Swine strips auction. The final numbers are pleasantly high. Combined the three strips raised $74,000 for Parkinson’s Disease research.

Here’s the final numbers for each strip:

$35,850

$21,510

$16,730

A big thanks to Bill, Stephan, Chris Sparks and all the behind the scenes people who made this happen.

  1. Thanks for the info, Alan.

Frankly, I’m surprised they went for so little. The other two b/w Watterson strips sold by Heritage went for about $54k and $40k (NOT including the absurd buyer’s premium). And those were not for a charitable cause, either!

Without the BP, the third Watterson/Pastis strip went for less than $14k. Whoever won that got a heck of a deal.

I wonder if it shows that collectors value CALVIN & HOBBES with Bill more than Bill Watterson and Pastis together.

This does occur in comic book art, where characters tend to rule as much or more than the artists…which IMO is sad. (If Picasso did a portrait of Marilyn Monroe, would it sell for more than his Guernica?) 😉

    Thanks again.

  2. As a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, I believe anything with C&H would sell for more. Look at the Petey painting Bill did for us a few years back. 13k for his first public oil painting? Madness!

On the other hand, I thought the strips would go for 10k, 15k, 10k, respectfully. So we did almost twice that!
$68,000 dollars of three strips for The Michael J fox foundation is nothing to sneeze at. Every penny we raise this year will go to research.( Someone covered all of the MJFF operating expenses for 2014).

So far we have raised over $82,000 for the MJFF this year and close to 200k since we started in 2010. Once we hit 200k I think I win a free T-shirt! 🙂

Thank you for everyone who has helped us!

    Chris Sparks
