DC execs say no to Batwoman gay marriage; 2 authors leave

Two Batwoman authors have left DC Comics after executives denied a possible wedding between the Kathy Kane character and her girlfriend Maggie Sawyer.

From the Atlantic Wire:

“We’re both heartbroken over leaving, but we feel strongly that you all deserve stories that push the character and the series forward. We can’t reliably do our best work if our plans are scrapped at the last minute, so we’re stepping aside,” wrote Batwoman co-authors J.H. Williams and W. Haden Blackman on their website late Wednesday night, explaining that DC Comics had squashed many of their editorial choices and “most crushingly, prohibited from ever showing Kate [Batwoman] and Maggie actually getting married.”

The Batwoman character was created in 1956, but killed off in 1979. In 2006, she was reincarnated as a “wealthy socialite Kathy Kane by day, costumed crime fighter by night and a lesbian“.

  1. Gee, I’m…indifferent? Batwoman not a lesbian? Or a celibate lesbian? Is there anyone who actually cares about this? Will I get hate mail from people who think lesbian superheros are underrepresented? Do I care?

People, superheros pretty much jumped the shark back around “Watchmen”. After reading way more than I wanted to about DC’s screwing the retailers over their 3D covers http://comicbastards.com/dcs-allocation-of-3-d-covers-means-you-might-be-screwed-but-not-as-much-as-the-retailers/ it’s time to give up comics and get a life, people.
