Captain Underpants most challenged book for banning

Dav Pilkeys Captain Underpants

Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants is the number one book most likely to be challenged for removal from a school and library in America according to the annual study released by the American Library Association. The Huffington Post reports that it’s due to “offensive language, unsuited for age group”.

From the Post:

“It’s pretty exciting to be on a list that frequently features Mark Twain, Harper Lee, and Maya Angelou,” Pilkey said in a statement. “But I worry that some parents might see this list and discourage their kids from reading `Captain Underpants,’ even though they have not had a chance to read the books themselves.”

Captain Underpants was a favorite for my son.

  1. Captain Underpants is amazingly funny and perfectly suited for kids because it s full of toilet humor and gross jokes. The stuff that makes kids cry with laughter.

My message to Mr. Pilkey: If they are trying to ban you with all their scholastic might, you must be doing something right.

  2. Man, I was a huge Captain Underpants fan growing up. The protagonists make their own comic books and there are always a bunch of fun two-page flipbooks. I think these books were as big an influence for me to get into cartooning as anything else out there. Anything that encourages kids to be creative is awesome in my book – and if it throws in a couple hilarious poop jokes, all the better!

  3. My kid has all of the Captain Underpants books, plus the Diaper Baby books, pretty much all of his stuff. He reads a lot of different stuff, but some kids don’t read much and Capt. Underpants gets the hard cases to actually give reading a chance.
