Zapiro awarded Freedom to Publish prize

South African cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro, better known as Zapiro has won the International Publishers Association’s Freedom to Publish prize. The Freedom to Publish award is given to individuals who make “notable contribution to the defence and promotion of freedom to publish anywhere in the world.” Zapiro is currently being sued by the South African president, Jacob Zuma, over a 2008 cartoon depicting the president poised to rape Lady Justice.

Despite attacks by government officials and others, Shapiro is not deterred.

“[I’m not], because when I wake up in the morning and I’m listening to the radio and reading the paper, there are so many things that still make me want to blow my fuse. They get my creative juices going.”
