Profiled: Mike Cope on fulfilling dream of becoming a cartoonist

The Hamilton Community News has profiled Canadian illustrator and cartoonist Mike Cope.

“When I was a kid, I remember always seeing cartoons in Reader’s Digest Canada,” Cope said. “The magazine is freelance-based. You’re up against a lot of competition, so when you get in there on your first try, it’s pretty cool and that inspires you to keep going.”

Cope has gone on to see his creative characters published in a variety of print and online media.

In addition to devising gag cartoons for Reader’s Digest Canada magazine, he also illustrates the educational comic, WebVoyagers, for the Canadian Reader, published by LesPlan Educational Services Ltd. The comic features three siblings who travel to different locations in Canada by pressing the ‘Enter’ key on their magic computer. During their adventures, they find out more about a region or place and then return home with a press to the ‘Home’ key.

  1. Great job Mike. Four years ago I contacted you about getting advice on cartooning. You gave me some great tips and really inspired me to try harder, now my comic strip Dingers is syndicated by Ink Bottle Syndicate and appears weekly in Funnies Extra. Thank you so much for the help and advice I really do credit you for a lot of my success.

  2. Hey, Ken! I remember our correspondences. Glad the tips on scanning and coloring worked for you 🙂 … I see your pen line has really developed too. Good stuff!

But more importantly, congratulations on getting syndicated by Ink Bottle! I hope Bill Kellogg helps you take Dingers to the next level — What a great guy to have in your corner!
