Profiled: Tom Batiuk on 40 years of Funky

Michael Heaton of The Plain Dealer interviews Funky Winkerbean creator Tom Batiuk about the 40 year anniversary of his feature.

Is there one story line that stands out in your mind?

That would be “Lisa’s Story.” I sometimes will go back and read that book and wonder who wrote it.

How do you respond to those who are critical of your taking on serious issues in the funny papers?
Really? That’s interesting. Here in the Funkyverse, surrounded by my imaginary friends, everything is peachy — no complaints. I’ll have to look into that and get back to you. But why are you asking me a serious question like that anyway? Aren’t you known for writing humorous pieces, and shouldn’t you be sticking to that? I love your early funny stuff, by the way.

  1. The strips is always brilliant. Tom is one of many cartoonists I have studied over the years.
