Rumors swirled last week that Will Smith wanted to remake the musical Annie and feature his daughter Willow. Turns out the rumors are now confirmed.
“The time is right to bring back ‘Annie’ to the big screen. Of course, we’re true believers in Willow’s talent and believe she will be perfect in this role,” Columbia Pictures President Doug Belgrad said in a statement.
Woo-hoo! Now if only Will Smth could produce a new newspaper strip…!

I’m not offended by an African American playing the role of Annie as some others are.
What offends me about this is the nepotism. “Hey I know who’d be perfect for the role of Annie… my daughter!”
If she doesn’t have red hair, she’s not Annie.
Can’t help but wonder if this is why the strip was stopped last year, so that the strip, then in fewer papers, wouldn’t confuse the potential audience for this new Annie movie, which is sure to bring in big money in royalties for TMS. You know they were talking long before now.
I wish Will Smith would just let his kids be regular KIDS
while they’re growing up, and not stick them with
full-fledged careers. Maybe Willow would rather be
just reading the funnies right now, instead of bringing
one to life on the big screen.
I think the Smith family would be OK financially if
their kids didn’t work for awhile!
Maybe a trend is emerging? It seems that Will Smith likes playing roles that were previously in other media played by Caucasian actors, or were originally Caucasian characters.
I’m pretty sure that Agent J was a white guy in the original MiB Comics; so was Jim West from Wild Wild West. I haven’t read the book, but I heard someone mention that the main character in I Am Legend was also Caucasian.
Then, his son takes on the main character role in the remake of “The Karate Kid,” and now his daughter is being handed Annie.
I’m not saying its bad, good or indifferent. Just an interesting observation of history repeating itself slightly? 😀
