Chattanooga Times Free Press editorial cartoonist Clay Bennett has won the Society of Professional Journalist’s 60th annual Green Eyeshade Awards for editorial cartooning. The awards recognize the best in print, broadcast and online journalism produced throughout eleven southeastern states. Editorial cartoonist Bill Day of United Features Syndicate took second place and third place went to Chan Lowe of The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.
This year’s Green Eyeshade award will be added to a long list of honors for Clay including the Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the Sigma Delta Chi Award, the National Journalism Award, two Overseas Press Club Awards and three National Headliner Awards. This is Clay’s third Green Eyeshade Award, having received it in 1984 and 1994 for his work at the St. Petersburg (FL) Times.
This is, I think, the third award Bill Day has won since being let go by The Memphis Commercial-Appeal. Look at his stuff, and you’ll agree with me that some newspaper needs to put this great cartoonist on its staff.
John- You might want to take a look at the above story again, because I was under the impression that Clay Bennett, and not Bill Day, won this award.
