‘Sunday Funnies’ stamp dedication set for Wednesday

The US Postal Service will hold a First-Day-of-Issue dedication ceremony of the Sunday Funnies at The Ohio State University Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum in Columbus OH. On hand for the occasion will be museum curator and professor Lucy Shelton Caswell, OSU President E. Gordon Gee, Beetle Bailey creator Mort Walker, Garfield creator Jim Davis, Dennis the Menace artists Marcus Hamilton and Ron Ferdinand, Archie Comics newspaper strip writer Craig Boldman and Calvin and Hobbes Editor Lee Salem.

The event is free to the public and begins at 10:30 a.m. this Wednesday at The Ohio State University Performance Hall at the Ohio Union, 1739 High Street Columbus, OH.

Correction: The event will be held tomorrow, the 16th, not Friday as I earlier reported. I’ve adjusted the dates above for clarity.

  1. Just for a historical addendum, the postal service issued a stamp series called American Comic Classics in 1995, honoring 20 classic newspaper strips. I bought the set along with a nice book that gave some detail on the history of each strip.

Strips included: The Yellow Kid, Katzenjammer Kids, Little Nemo in Slumberland, Bringing up Father, Krazy Kat, Rube Goldberg’s Inventions, Toonerville Folks, Gasoline Alley, Barney Google, Little Orphan Annie, Popeye, Blondie, Dick Tracy, Alley Oop, Nancy, Flash Gordon, Li’l Abner, Terry and the Pirates, Prince Valiant, and Brenda Starr, Reporter.

  2. I’d love to get a copy of these. Hope the US Postal Service offers shipping to Canada! I can just imagine trying to tell a border guard that I drove to Buffalo for the day just to buy cartoon stamps 🙂

  3. @Meredith: My parents bought me a framed collection of the comic stamps from 1995 for my 15th birthday. My Mom worked for the USPS and thought I would love it (she was right)
