Catch John and Anne Hambrock on Tall Tale Radio

I finished the John and Anne Hambrock interview yesterday. As always a great podcast in the can for Tom Racine. The trio discussed John’s nomination as Best Newspaper Comic strip and a detour discussion on recent movies.

  1. I could talk to John and Anne all day. They’re such great people and obvious movie fans. We should do an all cartoonist movie review show. 🙂 I’m pulling for “Edison” at the Reubens. “Non Sequitur” and “Zits” already have theirs!

  2. Anne and John sound like nice folks, but I would caution them to keep this award in perspective. Even if he does win, it will almost certainly have no effect on comic sales. Every cartoonist who has won will tell you the same thing. Maybe it made a difference 20 or 30 years ago, but now editors are not impressed with an award that means nothing to them. Gene Weingarten is in a much better position having won two Pulitzers because that is an award editors can relate to. But the NCS comic strip division award doesn’t even register. If it did, the Reubens would get much more ink than it does now, which is almost nothing.

It’s a great night when you are nominated and it’s an incredible experience to win. Such a huge honor to be recognized by your peers. That, in and of itself, is the real reward. Just don’t get too drunk. You’ll end up rampling and cussing like I did.

  3. The greatest reward I hope to get out of this nomination is to have to buy as few of my own drinks as possible the entire weekend. Mark’s advice has me reconsidering that wish.

Seriously, we share Mark’s feelings on what this truly is?The huge honor of recognition by your peers. Nothing more expected.

  4. No, don’t hold back on the free drinks. That’s definitely a plus. I’m much smaller than you are, so I get where I’m going pretty quickly. I’m just thinking about gin right now and I swear I have a buzz-on. Or maybe it’s the allergy medicine.

  5. John, I’ll buy you as many drinks as you like … including Mark’s famed gin and allergy medicine (which is a step up from the vodka and mercurochrome he was sipping last year … called it a Red Cross, I believe.) And I’ll keep buying you drinks. And more. And then I’ll simply steal your award and steam off the nameplate. And as long as nobody asks why my name is written in in Sharpie, or why I’m also using it as a cheeseplate, I just might get away with it. But just so you’re not surprised by the whole thing, the whole heinous act is actually listed in the weekend event schedule.

  6. My first grade teacher taught our class to never trust a cartoonist who offered to buy us free drinks. I’ve never understood these little words of wisdom until now. Glad I was paying attention that day.

  7. BTW Dave,

I seem to recall something about a little comic called Loose Parts being nominated in the panel category – congratulations and best of luck!
