I hope none of the Smurfs tries to leave for a solo career. It would really mess up their dynamic.

I always dug Smurfette's high heels...hot stuff.

Up until now, I had discounted the idea that you could blame the woes of the world on the permissiveness of liberal college professors!

If college isn't for having fun, what in tarnation is it for?

Oh, that.
Well, I learned real good, too.

Actually, Smurfette first appeared in 1966, but she was only a one-off character who appeared in one story. It wasn't until the animated series that she became part of the main characters.

In the comics, she was created by Gargamel as a way to lure the other Smurfs into his way. But she was troubled by how the other Smurfs acted in her presence, so she ran off to the forest, never to be seen again except for occasional appearances here and there.

"There are 105 Smurfs, total, with only three female Smurfs: Smurfette, Sassette and Granny Smurf.

There were no female Smurfs until the animated cartoon series in the 1980’s. So, for 30 years or so, it was an all-male community"

Stacy, I actually wrote a paper in college on that years ago (it was intended to be tongue in cheek) ripping the Smurfs as a socialist propaganda tool aimed at destroying tradional values in American children.

I remember arguing that Papa Smurf wore red (the Lenin totem), that they actually lived in a commune to try to demonstrate the 'folly' of capitalism, and they attacked the family unit by portraying several, several males to only one female...and with a baby! That could only mean blue orgy's every night! I think I tried to say Gargamel (sp?) was intended as the symbol of evil western capitalism with his magic (military and consumer technology) and that he was the muscle of the bourgeoisie. I had a lot of fun writing that!

Anyway, your comment just reminded me of that paper, and I had to laugh.

I got an "A" on that paper by the way....

May I inquire on the source which states that Winters "has signed" to voice Papa Smurf?

UGO.com is the original source of this news, as far as I have been able to determine, and even they don't reveal their own "well placed source." So until this has been officially confirmed and announced, it is simply a rumor.

Perhaps this film will explain why 99.99999% of all Smurfs are male.
