“Many current actors are storing digital performances of themselves in anticipation of the day when their digital self can be used in future movies.” Tom, is that hearsay or something you’ve read about somewhere? I’d be interested in knowing more about actors storing performances of themselves.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_actor

That's just a quick search result, tangentially related, but I've read about it elsewhere. Search on 'digitized actors' also.

Awesome movie, but the anatomy of the aliens was horribly stiff. Their torsos especially were mannequin like and I don't understand with the budget this movie commanded why they didn't do a better job on that aspect. Very entertaining, though, and I loved the plants and animals. Can't wait to see what they'll come up with next!

Well, it was done with Orville Redenbacher...

(that Orville is computer-generated and was made in 2007, more than 10 years after he died)

If it's true, we're bordering on creepiness. It was one thing to watch Heath Ledger as the Joker ... It'll be another to see a deceased actor/actress in a new movie long after they are gone.

Storing digital performances? I assume that's for storing only GOOD performance.

Kevin Costner's will probably be put on a 3 1/2 floppy...

"It may also become possible to resurrect any actor from any time period by creating a digital model from existing images. Will that be considered animation or live action?"

Well, it does involve some type of re-animation.

Does the film really count as animation, though? Most of the "animation" seen were really motion-captured, and even if it had animators rendering the captures frame by frame, the fact is the actors defined the movements.
