Mason Mastroianni gains byline on B.C. strip

Mason Mastroianni, who took over his grandfather Johnny Hart’s comic strip after his passing in 2007, is now being credited in the strips byline. Last Sunday was the first time the B.C. comic strip featured the byline “by “Mastroianni and Hart.” The change was prompted by Bobby Hart, Johnny’s widow, and Creators’ president Rick Newcombe who together decided that it was time to recognize Mason’s work because of his exceptional work in taking over his grandfather’s strip.

According to Rick, “Mason is a brilliant artist with a sense of humor very much like Johnny Hart’s — warm, incredibly funny and always surprising. With Mason at the helm, B.C. continues to be one of the most popular comic strips in the world today.”

Mason says his reaction to seeing the Mastroianni name on the strip was a bittersweet sense of humility and pride. “My brother, Mick, and I are very grateful to have been given the opportunity to continue our grandfather’s legacy,” Mason tells me. “Without a doubt, B.C. and the Wizard of Id’s continued success is the result of the support and hard work of my entire family, the Parker family and the wonderful folks at Creators Syndicate.”
