Google honors Popeye creator on homepage

google-popeye-logo

Today’s Google logo pays tribute to E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye, who was born on this date back in 1894.

The Popeye comic strip originally started as a piece called “Thimble Theater” for the NY Journal back in 1919. Original characters were Olive Oyl and Horace Hamgravy. The strip ran for 10 years before the character of Popeye was brought in as a mariner to sale a ship to Dice Island. The character with his clever, punchy and comedic lines was an instant hit with fans. Segar later introduced more characters including Wimpy and Brutus, Popeye’s rival.
