The comic book industry has been on shaky legs since their bubble burst in the early 90's. Remember the Death of Superman and the Death of Robin, when fairly recent 1st-printing comics were being traded as if they were securities?

The contraction that followed (or ran concomitant with) the bursting bubble resulted in a reduction of distributors of comics to comic book stores. Further contraction resulted in a monopoly for Diamond.

The current state of affairs in comics shops and comics publishers feels a lot like dead-end evolution. Diamond's monopoly has forced everyone to do things the same way, and in the current market that way isn't nearly as profitable as it used to be.
