Remember the Death of Superman and the Death of Robin, when fairly recent 1st-printing comics were being traded as if they were securities? The contraction that followed (or ran concomitant with) the bursting bubble resulted in a reduction of distributors of comics to comic book stores. Further contraction resulted in a monopoly for Diamond. The current state of affairs in comics shops and comics publishers feels a lot like dead-end evolution. Diamond's monopoly has forced everyone to do things the same way, and in the current market that way isn't nearly as profitable as it used to be.
