Comic page changes for the week (so far)

E&P reports that Alex Hallett’s Arctic Circle replaced Gasoline Alley in the Daily Gazette of Schenectady, N.Y.

Slylock Fox and Comics for Kids has been reinstated in The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J. after reader complaints. Pardon My Planet will be dropped to bring back Slylock Fox.

Chad Carpenter’s self-syndicated (domestically) feature Tundra has been picked up by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

The Journal Sentinel has picked up Gary Markstein and Anthony Rubino Jr.’s new feature Daddy’s Home that launched this week. Gary is features designer for the Journal Sentinel as well as a syndicated editorial cartoonist.

The Daily American has picked up Zits and Funky Winkerbean. No mention of any strips being dropped as a result.

  1. Upon looking up the American’s preview edition, I can’t seem to find “Funky Winkerbean” listed anywhere. Maybe there was an error that I may have to check up on. The daily lineup I saw had “For Better or For Worse”, “Hagar the Horrible”, “Mother Goose & Grimm”, “Blondie”, “Zits”, “Classic Peanuts”, “Non Sequitur”, “Hi & Lois”, “Garfield”, “Lio” and “Family Circus”. In an old American copy I have from 2006 I saw “Rose Is Rose” in the slot where “Zits” is on now so “Rose Is Rose” is history.

  2. It seems to be “Rhymes with Orange” and “Family Tree”

While I have accepted the fact that all papers seem to be following the “poll” method these days, it is a little too much when they seem to make a decision and then backtrack. Good luck Alex.

  3. Alex, you got 404 more votes than I did. All I got was one write-in. Still, I’m flattered.

Does anyone have an updated link for voting? I’ll be happy to throw my not-inconsiderable weight and inconsiderable influence behind “Arctic Circle.”

  4. Well I stink at understanding how to post links but I googled “daily gazette” poll results comics and came up with an article stating the results.

Rhymes with Orange won round 2 but with only half the number of votes received by Arctic Circle.

The article states that the paper is sticking with Arctic Circle and began running it March 10th.

    Congratulations, Alex

  5. Regarding the Star-Ledger:

Okay, I’m trying to figure this out. The Sunday comics remain at their shrunken six-page size as of today, but the comics were printed larger than they were the last few weeks. Some comics must have been dropped, therefore. Having read this post, I immediately noticed the absence of “Pardon Our Planet,” but I was surprised to see that “Slylock Fox” had not be reinstated as E&P wrote. “U Can With Beakman & Jax,” another kids comic, was also apparently missing. I suspect that other strips were dropped, but I wouldn’t be able to tell without digging up an old comics section from a couple years ago to compare it with.
