National Cartoon Museum bumped from Empire State Building

The National Cartoon Musuem will not be opening next spring in the Empire State Building in downtown Manhattan according to Comic Reporter Tom Spurgeon.

It all boiled down to the fact that the museum could not raise the money fast enough.  The management group that oversees retail space in the historic building was allowing the museum space rent free since last year, but since the museum was unable to begin the build out of the three story space, the management group elected to pull the plug on the deal.

The news is somewhat disappointing.  The idea of having a cartoon museum in such a high profile and heavily trafficked location was exciting.  According to the The Stamford Advocate story that Tom cited, Brian Walker is putting on a happy face and is talking about other locations that might work well also.

  1. The national cartoon Museum is a great idea and it, or a variation on it would be welcome in Elmira, New York in the Southern Finger lakes. Our community was the summer home to Mark twain, where he did the majority of his writings, including numerous cartoons, as well as the brith place and home of Hal Roach and Eugune Zimmerman.
