Mark Tatulli, who’s new feature “Lio” launched this week to over 100 newspapers was interviewed by the Winston-Salem Journal who now runs the feature. Subjects include the obligatory questions about how Mark got into cartooning; what Mark did for a living before cartooning became successful enough to support him financially; what make’s Lio different from other strips.

When he decided he wanted to try his hand at a second strip, he wanted something significantly different from Heart of the City.
“The thing I really wanted to do was something that is new,” he said. “I’m just tired of looking at the comics page and everything is words, words, words. This is all drawing. I can go anywhere with it and do anything, within editorial standards.”

Ya, I dig the fact that these off-beat strips finally are getting some exposure. Wasn’t Tatulli one of the originators of that underground comic collective with Andres Serrano who does the strip Dick Pato & Dirt Boy and of Piss Christ fame?
That group did some had hitting stuff.

I just discovered Lio in today’s (20 AUG 06) Chronicle while taking a dump. After reading the ‘strip’ (more like a ‘hilarity square’, nay even a ‘comical cube’), I laughed so hard that I automatically upgraded to a HORRENDOUS dump! Good job Tatulli! May you live a THOUSAND years! Mark Mabry

Yes, I LIO book is coming. I think it will be available by end of Summer or early Fall.

Mark for all the former weird kids out there I thank you for this fantastic piece of news. Lio makes my day and brings back a lot of memories of what fascinated me and my friends.

i can not wait till the book comes out! everyday i cut out Lio and post it on my desk…its what keeps me going through the day. I LOVE LIO!!!!
Lio is brilliant. I can’t get enough of it.
I seriously almost peed a little bit when I read the summer camp strip when the skull fell out of the bag. Lio never fails to amaze me with it’s content and it’s art.
At times it reminds me of some of the early turn of the century cartoons, which are suprisingly very dark in their humor with almost grotesque imagery due in part, I think, from the repressed victorian social class finally coming to an end with the approach of the 20th century.
I laughed my arse off . . .

Just wanted to let you know I think Lio is the best. I have been enjoying comics for 60 years and Lio is a winner. I love comics that are international. Without words they can be understood by anyone. He is almost always happy with his great smile at all the bizarre pets and circumstances he is involved with. I can relate. Excellent! Keep up the good work.

First, thank you. Second thanks again. The first time I read Lio I fell in love! It was where Lio dressed up like a teddy bear and hid in that little girlâ??s room, by favorite by far is the one that (I think) got Lio suspended from the Detroit Free Press; the child eating bunny book Lio was reading! Iâ??m laughing out loud just thinking about it. I bought both books Heart of the city and Lio. I can’t wait for more.
Heart of the city is my favorite comic. I’ve used it many times as a kick-off in my Social Studies class. I haven’t caught Lio yet but now I plan to do so.
It’s Father’s Day today and I’m remembering your Father’s Day cartoon from several years ago that touched my heart like no other.
