Pittsburgh Post-Gazette fires Tim Menees

The first editorial cartoonist to lose his/her job in 2006 for budgetary reasons is Tim Menees who has worked for that paper for 30 years.

In a cost-cutting move, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette this week laid off several non-union workers, including longtime cartoonist Tim Menees and Washington, D.C., bureau chief Michael McGough.

Although both Menees and McGough are longtime editorial department employees, Block said the decision to include them in the layoffs was not based on seniority. As management personnel, they would not have been afforded job security through the seniority provisions of a union contract.

Neither Menees nor McGough could be reached for comment Friday.

Menees had been a cartoonist with the Post-Gazette for about 30 years. The paper has Rob Rogers to serve as the editorial cartoonist, Block said. “We don’t need two cartoonists,” he said.

  1. Shame on you. Tim Menees was excellent. I always looked for his imput to whatever was happening in the news. He always had a special insight and hit it on the head every time.
